Senator Dela Rosa Urges Transparency on ICC’s Presence in the Philippines

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has called for clear communication from Malacañang regarding the alleged presence of International Criminal Court (ICC) investigators in the Philippines. This statement comes amid claims by former senator Antonio Trillanes IV that an arrest warrant might soon be issued against ex-president Rodrigo Duterte and others tied to the ICC’s probe into the Duterte administration’s controversial war on drugs.

Dela Rosa, during a press conference, emphasized the importance of straightforwardness from the current government. He recalled a conversation with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., where the president supposedly assured him that ICC investigators would not be permitted into the country. The senator stressed the need for direct communication, especially if there has been a shift in the government’s stance since that conversation.

“If you told me before that they would not be allowed in and now you have allowed them in, please tell us,” Dela Rosa implored, advocating for open and direct communication. He insisted on a ‘man-to-man’ dialogue, underscoring the gravity of the situation for those involved in the ICC investigation.

Dela Rosa expressed his willingness to cooperate if the government officially confirms the presence and activities of ICC investigators in the country. He highlighted the importance of official communication and expressed his reluctance to rely on hearsay or unofficial reports.

The senator’s appeal for transparency and direct communication reflects the sensitive nature of the ICC’s investigation into the Duterte administration’s drug war. Dela Rosa, having previously identified himself as the “number 2 accused” in the ICC probe, is understandably concerned about the developments and the government’s stance on the matter.

With the ICC Appeals Chamber denying the Philippine government’s appeal to stop the probe and the ICC Prosecutor Pre-Trial chamber’s observations regarding the drug war, the situation remains complex and highly charged. As the country navigates these challenging waters, Dela Rosa’s call for clarity and transparency stands as a reminder of the need for open dialogue and clear communication in addressing such critical issues.
