Cheerleader Charm Meets Gothic Tale: Liza Soberano in ‘Lisa Frankenstein

In the Hollywood debut film “Lisa Frankenstein,” Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano stars as Taffy, a high school cheerleader. This upcoming American horror comedy, penned by Diablo Cody and marking Zelda Williams’ first feature-length directorial effort, is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on February 9, 2024, by Focus Features.

The plot revolves around a teenage goth girl, Lisa Swallows, played by Kathryn Newton, who reanimates a handsome corpse from the Victorian era during a lightning storm. Using a broken tanning machine in her garage, Lisa transforms the corpse into her ideal man. Together, the pair embark on a darkly humorous and murderous quest for true love, happiness, and a few essential missing body parts.

In addition to Newton and Soberano, the film features Cole Sprouse in a leading role, along with Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, and Carla Gugino. The script for “Lisa Frankenstein” was announced by Diablo Cody in June 2022, with the production commencing in New Orleans around August 2022, expected to continue until September.

This project represents a significant career move for Liza Soberano, who has previously discussed her ambitions to expand her career beyond the Philippine showbiz industry. Her signing with James Reid’s talent agency, Careless, in 2023, marked the beginning of this new phase in her career, which includes plans to venture into Korean entertainment as well.
