Swift Action by Japan Airlines Crew Averts Disaster, Safely Evacuates 367 Passengers

In a remarkable display of professionalism and quick thinking, the crew of a Japan Airlines passenger jet successfully evacuated 367 passengers after a harrowing collision with a smaller plane on a Tokyo runway. Taking a mere 18 minutes to ensure everyone’s safety, the crew’s actions were exemplary in managing a potentially catastrophic situation. They followed emergency procedures flawlessly, beginning with maintaining calm amongst the passengers as the aircraft, an Airbus A350, was engulfed in flames and smoke.

The crew skillfully assessed the situation and made critical decisions, such as selecting safe emergency exits for evacuation. Notably, when the public announcement and intercom systems failed, they wisely chose to open a rear exit, allowing passengers to escape via evacuation chutes. This decision was in line with their annual training, which prepares them for various emergency scenarios, including communication breakdowns with the cockpit.

This incident marked the first major accident involving the Airbus A350, a leading long-haul jet since 2015, and the first instance of a passenger plane constructed primarily from lightweight carbon composites being completely consumed by fire. The A350-900 model is designed for rapid evacuation, certified to clear a full load of up to 440 passengers within 90 seconds using only half of its exits. This event will likely inform future safety protocols and evacuation procedures. The Japan Airlines crew’s exemplary conduct and the passengers’ orderly response, despite the full flight that included young children, received high praise from both airline officials and Airbus representatives.
