De La Salle Ends 7-Year Drought with UAAP Championship Victory

De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers triumphed over the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons with a score of 73-69 in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 86 Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, ending a seven-year championship drought. The Green Archers displayed remarkable tenacity, particularly in the second half of the game, overcoming a four-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Kevin Quiambao, the Season 86 MVP, played a pivotal role in La Salle’s victory, delivering an impressive performance with 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. His efforts were complemented by Evan Nelle, who contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

The game reached its climax in the final quarter, where La Salle, trailing by seven points, launched a decisive 15-4 run, led by Quiambao. His crucial three-pointer ignited this win-clinching rally, turning the tide in La Salle’s favor. Despite a late effort from UP to close the gap, Quiambao’s free throws sealed the victory for La Salle. The triumph was especially significant for first-year La Salle coach Topex Robinson, marking his first collegiate title as a head coach.

The victory not only brought the championship back to Taft Avenue but also marked La Salle’s 10th overall championship in UAAP men’s basketball, joining the ranks of other prestigious UAAP schools with double-digit basketball titles. This win is a testament to the team’s resilience and determination, overcoming an initial series deficit and bouncing back strongly in the finals to claim the championship crown.
