MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines bagged 3 awards at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2022 held in Vietnam on September 7.

The country was hailed as Asia’s Leading Beach Destination, Leading Diving Destination, and Leading Tourist Attraction for Intramuros.

This is the sixth time that the country snagged the recognition for Asia’s Leading Beach Destination from the London-based award-giving body. Along with that, this is the fourth consecutive year that the Pearl of the Orient Seas has been named as Asia’s Leading Diving Destination since 2019.

Meanwhile, Intramuros beat other popular tourist spots nominated in the category, including Taj Mahal of India, Great Wall of China, Tokyo Imperial Palace of Japan, and Angkor Temples of Cambodia.

“The Philippines is a beautiful country and you (WTA) having given these awards is such an affirmation to all of our tourism stakeholders and workers who have greatly sacrificed throughout the pandemic,” Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said.

“We look to the future with hope that through our combined efforts under the Marcos administration that has identified tourism to become a major pillar for economic recovery that not only will we survive the pandemic but we will thrive, we will endure and we will get back stronger than ever,” she added.

During a briefing with the House Committee on Appropriations last August 31, the Department of Tourism presented the budget of Php 3.573 billion for FY 2023 covering the Department’s Office of the Secretary (OSec), Intramuros Administration (IA), National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), and the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD)—which is currently transitioning as an attached agency of the Department.
