Brian Poe Joins PCG Auxiliary in Push to Protect PH Seas

MANILA, Philippines — Bridging legislative policy with direct maritime advocacy, a sitting party-list lawmaker has officially joined the ranks of the nation’s volunteer coast guardians. FPJ Panday Bayanihan party-list Representative Brian Poe has been formally inducted into the Executive Squadron of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA).

The induction ceremony, which featured an official donning of ranks and oath-taking, took place at the National Headquarters of the Philippine Coast Guard in Manila.

The ceremony formally integrated the young lawmaker into the specialized executive arm of the maritime support organization, placing him in a strategic position to help shape coastal protection initiatives:

Welcoming remarks were delivered by PCG Vice Admiral Hostillo Arturo Cornelio, while PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan led the official donning of ranks. Gavan welcomed Poe into the PCG family, praising him as a young leader who “chooses to show up” to help safeguard the country’s vast maritime territory. In his address, Poe expressed deep humility, noting that while the public often only notices the uniform during formal ceremonies, it represents profound personal sacrifice, sleepless nights, and constant operational readiness.

Poe closely linked his military auxiliary induction to his active legislative focus on marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, and the growth of the local blue economy (the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth):

  • The GDP Anchor: During a recent privilege speech marking National Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month, Poe highlighted that the country’s ocean economy generated roughly ₱1.01 trillion in 2024, accounting for 3.8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  • The Jobs Engine: The maritime sector acts as a massive livelihood foundation, directly supporting an estimated 2.39 million jobs across the Philippine archipelago.
  • The Illegal Fishing Drain: Poe raised the alarm over illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which siphons an estimated ₱62.6 billion annually away from domestic municipal fishers and commercial fleets.

By putting on the one-star rank of an Auxiliary Commodore, Poe emphasized that protecting marine ecosystems is no longer just an environmental talking point. Instead, it represents an existential trinity of national survival: a core economic strategy, an essential food security policy, and a non-negotiable pillar of national sovereignty defense in the West Philippine Sea.
