Trough of TS Caloy to Affect Visayas, Mindanao Beginning Sunday Night

MANILA, Philippines — While Tropical Storm “Caloy” (international name: Hagupit) is moving away from the Philippine landmass, state weather bureau PAGASA warned on Sunday morning, May 10, 2026, that its trough (extension) is expected to bring rains to the southern half of the country starting this evening.

Despite the storm’s presence within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Easterlies remain the dominant weather system, maintaining high temperatures and humid conditions across most of Luzon and the rest of the archipelago.

Tropical Storm Caloy has slightly decelerated as it moves over the Philippine Sea. Its center remains far from the coast, posing no direct threat of landfall.

  • Location: Approximately 910 km east of Northeastern Mindanao.
  • Movement: West-northwestward at 15 kph.
  • Strength: Maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

Meteorologists expect Caloy to have a short lifespan as a tropical cyclone due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions.

  1. Trough Effects: Starting Sunday night until Tuesday, the trough of Caloy will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to the eastern portions of Visayas and Mindanao. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for localized flooding during heavy downpours.
  2. Weakening Trend: Caloy is forecast to weaken into a Tropical Depression by Sunday evening or Monday morning.
  3. Final Dissipation: By Tuesday, May 12, the system is expected to deteriorate further into a remnant low before eventually dissipating east of the Bicol Region.

PAGASA has issued a warning for moderate to rough seas in several areas over the next 24 hours. Small seacraft are advised to take precautionary measures.

Areas with wave heights up to 2.5 meters:

  • Eastern seaboards of Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands.
  • Seaboards of Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
  • Northwestern seaboard of Ilocos Norte.

For the rest of the country, including Metro Manila, the weather will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to the Easterlies.

  • High Temperatures: Daytime temperatures in Metro Manila are expected to reach 35°C, with heat indices likely hitting the “Danger” category (42°C–44°C) in over 26 areas nationwide.
  • Thunderstorms: Localized thunderstorms are still possible in the afternoon or evening, particularly in inland areas of Luzon.
