Shulchenko Stays Ahead: Russian Ace Thwarts Local Alliances in Tour of Luzon

PAOAY, Ilocos Norte — Russian powerhouse Nikita Shulchenko remains the man to beat in the 2026 MPTC Tour of Luzon, successfully defending his yellow jersey through Stage 8 despite mounting efforts from local Filipino riders to form a unified front against him.

As of May 8, 2026, Shulchenko of the LCW UAE Cycling Team holds an aggregate time of 22:48:34, maintaining a significant 1-minute and 38-second lead over his teammate, Ibrahiem Alrefai.

The narrative of the race shifted earlier this week when former Tour winners and coaches, including Mark Galedo, exhorted Filipino riders to set aside team rivalries and form a strategic alliance. The goal: to “chop down” Shulchenko’s formidable lead before the race reaches the grueling mountain stages of Baguio.

  • Mervin Corpuz (7-Eleven Cliqq Roadbike PH): Currently the top-performing Filipino in 3rd place overall, trailing by 4:15. Corpuz admitted that while the gap is “imposing,” cooperation among local teams like 7-Eleven, Standard Insurance, and Go for Gold could still turn the tide.
  • Stage 8 Performance: Despite the talk of alliances, Shulchenko finished comfortably within the main pack in the 157.4-kilometer race from Pagudpud to Paoay. The stage was won by local rider Ryan Tugawin, but because the leaders finished with similar times, Shulchenko’s overall advantage remained untouched.

The 26-year-old Russian has held the yellow jersey since Stage 3 and solidified his dominance by winning the Stage 7 Individual Time Trial (ITT) in Pagudpud with a blistering time of 30:06.

“I believe I can win. The mountain climbs in the next stages are good for me,” a confident Shulchenko stated. “I am a champion in Russia, winning multi-day races in the mountains. I can protect this jersey.”

With the race moving into its second half, the “Luzon Odyssey” is far from over. The upcoming stages feature:

  1. Dreaded Baguio Climb: The final test where pure climbers will look to exploit any weakness in the Russian leader.
  2. Team Battles: Go for Gold Philippines currently leads the Team General Classification, followed closely by Standard Insurance and 7-Eleven.

While the local riders are beginning to coordinate their attacks, Shulchenko’s “Yellow Streak” appears resilient, backed by a strong LCW UAE squad that has controlled the tempo of the Tour since the opening flag in Batangas.
