One Win Away: Unbeaten Lady Spikers Inch Closer to UAAP Redemption

PASAY CITY, Philippines — Driven by the sting of last year’s finals defeat, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers moved within a single victory of a perfect season after dominating the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball finals.

Before a crowd of over 15,000 at the Mall of Asia Arena on May 6, 2026, the Lady Spikers extended their incredible winning streak to 15-0, proving that their “unbeaten” tag is backed by both skill and a deep-seated desire for payback.

The match was a showcase of La Salle’s balanced offensive and defensive depth. While NU showed flashes of the championship poise that led them to the title last season, they were ultimately stifled by La Salle’s tactical precision.

  • The Canino Factor: Former MVP Angel Canino led the charge with a game-high 17 points, complemented by 9 digs and 5 receptions. Her leadership was evident during the crucial stretches of the first set, where La Salle overcame a 9-14 deficit.
  • Reterta’s Spark: Shane Reterta proved to be a vital secondary option, contributing 11 markers and elite floor defense with 23 receptions.
  • The “Great Wall” of Taft: Amie Provido anchored the net with 4 blocks (12 total points), part of a defensive scheme that limited NU’s rookie sensation Sam Cantada to just two points.

For many of the veteran Lady Spikers, this finals series is personal. Last year, NU denied La Salle’s bid for a title in a heartbreaking finish. Head coach Ramil de Jesus has used that memory as a primary motivator throughout Season 88.

“The goal isn’t just to win; it’s to finish what we started,” Canino said after the Game 1 win. “We remember the feeling of last year, and we don’t want to feel that again. We are one win away, but we have to treat the next game as if it’s 0-0.”

The Lady Bulldogs entered the finals as the second seed, having survived a grueling “stepladder” semifinal against UST. However, the departure of key stars like Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon to the professional ranks has forced a rebuilding phase. While Arah Panique (18 points) and Vange Alinsug (12 points) fought valiantly, the team struggled with 21 unforced errors.

La Salle has a chance to complete the “Season Sweep”—a feat that would automatically crown them champions without a Game 3 if they win on Saturday.

Game 2 Schedule:

  • Date: May 9, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Time: 5:00 PM
  • Venue: Mall of Asia Arena
  • Ceremony: Awarding for Season 88 individual honors will take place at 4:00 PM.
