Bulacan Jeepney Operators Receive Critical Rice and Cash Aid

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan – In a move to provide immediate relief to the backbone of the local transport sector, the provincial government of Bulacan has rolled out a comprehensive subsidy program providing rice and cash assistance to thousands of jeepney drivers across the province.

The distribution, which took place at several key hubs including the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium, is part of a broader social safety net designed to help public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers navigate the rising costs of living and fluctuating fuel prices. For many “tsuper,” who have been struggling to bring home a decent daily wage, the assistance is a much-needed lifeline.

Each beneficiary received a significant supply of rice along with a cash subsidy intended to cover basic household expenses or vehicle maintenance. Local officials emphasized that the program is a recognition of the vital role jeepney drivers play in keeping the local economy moving, often working long hours under challenging conditions.

Governor Daniel Fernando, leading the distribution, noted that the provincial government remains committed to supporting the transport sector. “Our drivers are among the hardest working members of our community,” the Governor shared. “This aid is our way of showing that the government is here to share their burden during these tough economic times.”

The transport sector in Bulacan, much like the rest of the country, has been hit hard by inflation. With the price of basic commodities rising, the take-home pay of jeepney drivers has been stretched thin. Drivers expressed their gratitude during the event, noting that the rice supply alone would provide food security for their families for several weeks.

“Malaking tulong po ito sa amin, lalo na ngayon na ang mahal ng bilihin,” said one veteran driver from the Malolos-Hagonoy route. “Kahit papaano, mababawasan ang iniisip namin pag-uwi sa pamilya.”

While the cash and rice distribution provides immediate relief, provincial leaders are also looking at long-term support for the sector. This includes ongoing dialogues regarding the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) and potential local initiatives to provide scholarships for drivers’ children and access to affordable healthcare.

The distribution is expected to continue in phases, ensuring that drivers from even the most remote towns in Bulacan are reached. As the province continues to grow, local leaders are making it clear that no sector—especially the one that keeps the wheels of progress turning—will be left behind.
