‘Please, for the Country’: Sharon Cuneta Makes Heartfelt Appeal for Leni Robredo to Run in 2028

MANILA, Philippines — The “Megastar” has spoken. In a move that has reignited political discussions across social media, veteran actress and singer Sharon Cuneta made a public, emotional appeal to former Vice President Leni Robredo to reconsider her stance and run for the presidency in the 2028 national elections.

Cuneta, a staunch supporter of Robredo during the 2022 campaign, took to her social media platforms to express what she described as a “growing clamor from the heart,” urging the former VP to lead the opposition once more.

In a lengthy post that quickly went viral, Cuneta shared a throwback photo with Robredo, accompanied by a caption that spoke of the country’s current challenges.

“I know you are happy with your quiet life now, helping through Angat Buhay,” Cuneta wrote. “But the country is at a crossroads. Many of us are still hoping for the kind of leadership you showed us. Please, Ma’am Leni, reconsider 2028. We are still here, and we are ready.”

Since the 2022 elections, Robredo has largely stepped away from partisan politics, focusing her energy on Angat Pinas Inc. (the NGO born from her Angat Buhay program). She has repeatedly stated in interviews that she has “no plans” to seek national office again, preferring to empower local communities and NGOs.

However, Cuneta’s appeal highlights a persistent sentiment among “Kakampinks” (Robredo’s supporters) who view her as the only viable alternative to the current administration and its potential successors.

Cuneta’s statement comes at a strategic time, as early surveys for the 2028 elections begin to surface, dominated by names like Vice President Sara Duterte and Senator Imee Marcos.

The Megastar’s plea has drawn polarized reactions:

  • Supporters: Applauded the actress for using her influence to voice the hopes of the “Pink” movement.
  • Critics: Argued that the country needs to “move on” and that Robredo’s previous defeat should serve as a definitive conclusion to her presidential ambitions.

It is worth noting that Sharon Cuneta’s husband, former Senator Kiko Pangilinan, served as Robredo’s running mate in 2022. While Pangilinan has remained active in political discourse, particularly on agricultural issues, Cuneta’s post is seen by some analysts as a “litmus test” to gauge public interest in a potential 2028 comeback for the tandem.

As of press time, Leni Robredo has not issued an official response to Cuneta’s appeal. Observers suggest that Robredo is likely to maintain her focus on her NGO work for the time being, especially as the 2025 midterm elections approach, which will serve as a more immediate indicator of the opposition’s strength.

Regardless of the outcome, Sharon Cuneta’s bold endorsement serves as a reminder that the “Pink” fire, while quiet, is far from extinguished.
