LAS PIÑAS CITY, Philippines — Las Piñas Representative Camille Villar has made a strong appeal for enhanced collaboration between the government and the private sector to accelerate the country’s transition to renewable energy. Villar emphasized that strategic partnerships are the key to achieving energy security and meeting the Philippines’ climate goals.
The lawmaker’s call comes at a time when the country is grappling with high electricity costs and the urgent need to diversify its energy mix.
Villar highlighted that the government cannot handle the massive shift to sustainable energy alone. Her proposal focuses on several key areas of cooperation:
- Infrastructure Investment: Encouraging private firms to invest in large-scale solar, wind, and tidal energy projects through better incentives and streamlined permitting processes.
- Technology Transfer: Leveraging the expertise of global tech leaders to bring modern battery storage solutions and smart grid technology to local communities.
- Community-Based Solar: Promoting “micro-grid” partnerships where private developers work with local government units (LGUs) to provide cheap, renewable power to remote or off-grid areas.
As a member of the House of Representatives, Villar has been a vocal supporter of policies that modernize the Philippine energy sector:
- Net Metering Expansion: She advocates for making it easier for households and small businesses to sell excess solar power back to the grid.
- Incentivizing EVs: Villar has also linked sustainable energy to the transport sector, pushing for the expansion of EV (Electric Vehicle) charging stations powered by renewable sources.
- Youth Engagement: She emphasized the role of the younger generation in driving the “Green Economy,” calling for educational partnerships that train Filipino students for jobs in the renewable energy industry.
The congresswoman noted that shifting to sustainable energy is no longer just an environmental choice, but an economic necessity:
- Lowering Costs: “By investing in our own natural resources—the sun, the wind, and the water—we protect Filipino families from the volatile prices of imported coal and oil,” Villar stated.
- Disaster Resilience: Sustainable energy systems, particularly decentralized solar grids, are often more resilient during typhoons compared to traditional centralized power lines.
Villar’s advocacy aligns with the national government’s target to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. She urged her colleagues in Congress to prioritize bills that remove “bottlenecks” in renewable energy development.
“A sustainable future is a collective effort. When the government provides the right framework and the private sector brings the innovation and capital, it is the Filipino people who win through cleaner air and cheaper electricity.” — Rep. Camille Villar
