Free Rides for Workers: MRT-3 and LRT-2 Announce Labor Day Schedule

MANILA, Philippines — In a gesture of appreciation for the Filipino workforce, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) have announced free rides for workers on May 1, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

The advisory, released on Tuesday, April 28, outlines specific time windows and requirements for commuters to avail of the service.

Workers can travel for free during the peak morning and afternoon hours on Wednesday, May 1:

  • Morning Window: 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
  • Afternoon/Evening Window: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM

To enjoy the free fare, passengers simply need to present a valid Company I.D. to the station personnel at the service gates of any MRT-3 or LRT-2 station.

Beyond the Labor Day special, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reminded the public that both train lines continue to offer a 50% discount on fares for all passengers. This nationwide transport relief measure has been in effect since March 23, 2026, aimed at mitigating the impact of rising fuel prices and inflation on daily commuters.

The free ride announcement comes as labor groups, led by the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), prepare for nationwide protests. This year’s demonstrations are expected to focus on a wide range of issues, including:

  • Wage Hikes: Demands for a substantial increase in the national minimum wage.
  • Economic Relief: Protests against high commodity and utility prices.
  • Geopolitical Concerns: Objections to the ongoing regional conflicts and their impact on local energy and food security.

The government’s provision of free transport is seen as a traditional “Labor Day gift” to the working class, though labor leaders continue to push for more permanent structural economic reforms.
