ILOILO CITY — Research at Central Philippine University (CPU) is moving out of the ivory tower and into the real world. This week, a massive cohort of 635 student researchers and 11 faculty members took center stage at “RESONATE,” a four-day innovation gathering aimed at solving the most pressing challenges facing the Iloilo region.
The event, held from April 14 to 17 at the university’s Jaro District campus, underscored a new era of “place-based” science—studies specifically designed to impact local agriculture, coastal ecosystems, and urban life.
The sheer variety of projects reflected the unique needs of Western Visayas. Among the standout innovations were:
- Climate-Smart Farming: Studies on how shifting weather patterns affect local rice production and the introduction of automated agricultural machinery.
- Sustainability Solutions: AI-based systems for local use, solar-powered fish feeders to assist coastal communities, and rainwater harvesting designs for Iloilo City’s urban center.
- Health and Food Safety: Research into plant-based therapeutics derived from local materials and initiatives to improve food safety standards in public markets.
Acting Vice President for Research, Aries Roda D. Romallosa, delivered a poignant message during the summit: research that stays in the lab is research that has failed.
“If research remains unheard, unseen, or unused—its impact is limited,” Romallosa said. “When research resonates, it moves beyond the laboratory; it reaches people, influences decisions, and creates meaningful change.”
The event wasn’t just an academic exercise. It featured strong backing from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), with Regional Director Rowen Gelonga reaffirming the government’s commitment to turning these university breakthroughs into commercial applications and public policy.
By focusing on “Agham na Ramdam” (Science that is Felt), the university and its 646 researchers are positioning Iloilo as a hub for innovation that serves the Filipino people—not just the scientific community.
