LAMUT, Ifugao — In a grand display of community spirit and local pride, at least 400 kilos of tilapia were grilled and shared among thousands of residents and visitors during the Rambakan Festival on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
The massive grilling event served as a major highlight of Lamut’s 67th founding anniversary, celebrating the town’s status as a premier aquaculture hub in the region.
The event saw active participation from women’s organizations and farmers’ groups representing all 18 barangays of the municipality.
- Barangay Participation: Each barangay was provided with 20 kilograms of fresh tilapia to grill in a public session, which was then served for free to festival-goers.
- Guest Provision: An additional 40 kilos were specifically allotted for visiting dignitaries and tourists, reportedly disappearing within minutes during a festive late lunch.
- Culinary Competition: Beyond the communal grill, participants showcased their creativity in a cooking contest, preparing various dishes such as sweet and sour, sarsiado, and paksiw using 10 kilos of rice and 8 kilos of tilapia per entry.
Local officials described the festival as a “fitting symbol of unity and cooperation.” The choice of tilapia is no coincidence, as Lamut is recognized as a top producer of the fish in Ifugao.
- Water Resource: Along with the neighboring towns of Alfonso Lista and Aguinaldo, Lamut benefits significantly from its proximity to the Magat Dam in Isabela, which provides the ideal environment for large-scale aquaculture.
- Economic Driver: The festival serves as a platform to promote the town’s “One Town, One Product” (OTOP) and various value-added products like deboned tilapia, tilapia balls, and “Tilanggit” (dried tilapia).
The Rambakan Festival, which translates to “joyful merry-making” in Ilocano, featured a diverse range of cultural and athletic activities, including:
- Cultural Presentations: Traditional Ifugao dances and performances.
- Indigenous Games: Competitions like the kadang-kadang (bamboo stilt) race.
- Agricultural Fair: Showcasing Ifugao Robusta and Arabica coffee, upland rice, and the local rice wine, Tapuey.
The successful event underscored Lamut’s resilience and its ongoing efforts to boost local tourism by highlighting its unique blend of agricultural productivity and rich cultural heritage.
