CALATRAVA, ROMBLON — As summer travel peaks, those looking for an alternative to crowded commercial hotspots are finding a hidden gem in Calatrava, a town on the northern coast of Tablas Island.
Known for its uncrowded coastlines and affordable rates, Calatrava is positioning itself as an ideal “budget-friendly” destination for both local and foreign tourists amid rising global energy costs.
The town’s main draw lies in its secluded coastal attractions, many of which are conveniently located within a single barangay:
- Guindawahan Island: Famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sand.
- Tinagong Dagat: A “hidden sea” that offers a serene and unique swimming experience.
- Lapus-Lapus Beach: A quiet stretch perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the typical summer crowds.
- Other Spots: Ngak-Ngak Beach and Cove Aurelio Resort also offer refreshing coastal retreats.
Beyond the beaches, Calatrava is home to eight waterfalls, providing cooler, inland alternatives to the summer heat:
- Top Falls: Humbak-Humbak Falls, Kalipay Falls, and Salingpaca Falls are among the most popular for trekkers and nature lovers.
- Other Falls: Cawa, Secret Lagoon, Tagpuan, Oray, and El Telon falls offer varied landscapes for adventure seekers.
Local officials have ensured that exploring Calatrava remains accessible to many:
- Island Hopping: Rates can go as low as ₱3,000 for a group of 10 people.
- Environmental Fee: A minimal fee of ₱20 per visitor is collected to support local conservation efforts.
- Accommodations: Options range from simple guesthouses to cozy beachfront inns, catering to different budget levels.
While there are no direct flights to Calatrava, several sea and land routes are available:
- Via Batangas: Take a ferry to Odiongan (8 hours), then a one-hour land transfer (jeepney, van, or tricycle) to Calatrava.
- Via Lucena: Take a ferry from Dalahican Port to San Agustin Port (7 hours), followed by a 30-minute ride to the town.
- Via Caticlan: Fly to Caticlan (45 mins), then take a three-hour boat ride to Malbog Port in Looc, followed by a two-hour land trip to Calatrava.
“We want to ensure that in Calatrava, every peso counts and memories last,” said Mayor Robert Fabella. With its combination of natural beauty and warm local hospitality, the town is quickly becoming Romblon’s best-kept summer secret.
