MANILA, Philippines — State weather bureau PAGASA is monitoring a tropical depression (TD) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that is expected to enter the country’s monitoring domain by next week. Once it enters PAR, it will be locally named “Caloy.”
As of 2:00 AM on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the weather system was located approximately 2,880 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao.
The tropical depression is moving slowly westward with the following characteristics:
- Maximum Sustained Winds: 55 kilometers per hour (kph)
- Gustiness: Up to 70 kph
- Landfall Probability: Currently low.
PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez noted that the system is projected to move northward once it enters PAR. However, the track remains uncertain, and meteorologists are not ruling out further intensification. The system could potentially reach typhoon or even super typhoon strength as it moves over open water.
While the tropical depression is still far off, a high-pressure area ridge is affecting Northern and Central Luzon, leading to hot and humid conditions across the archipelago on this Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan).
Dangerous heat index levels are expected today:
- Metro Manila: 37°C to 38°C
- Visayas and Mindanao: Up to 42°C in certain areas.
PAGASA advises the public to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the peak heat hours of midday and early afternoon. Isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are still possible in the late afternoon or evening due to localized weather disturbances.
