SBMA and BJMP Partner for Mangrove Conservation in Subic Bay

OLONGAPO CITY — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology – Regional Office 3 (BJMPRO3) have formalized a partnership to develop and maintain a 400-square-meter mangrove area within the Subic Bay Freeport.

The initiative falls under the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program, which aims to strengthen the environmental protection of the Freeport’s extensive coastal resources.

  • Mandate: BJMP personnel will plant at least 100 mangrove seedlings and ensure the survival of the propagules in the designated zone.
  • Duration: The program is a three-year commitment. SBMA will conduct annual monitoring and evaluation, after which a Certificate of Completion will be awarded to BJMPRO3 upon the final turnover of the site.
  • Maintenance: Beyond planting, BJMP personnel are tasked with regular cleanup activities and providing the necessary manpower to maintain the site’s ecological health.
  • Resources: SBMA will provide the seedlings from its internal nursery and designate the specific portion of the forest for adoption.

The Subic Bay Freeport is home to approximately 61 hectares of protected mangrove forests, primarily located in Triboa Bay, Binictican, and Malawaan. These areas are vital for:

  • Coastal Protection: Acting as natural barriers against storm surges and erosion.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Providing nursery grounds for marine life and nesting sites for various bird species.
  • Ecotourism: Serving as key locations for sustainable nature-based tourism in Central Luzon.

The agreement was signed by SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose Aliño and BJMPRO3 Jail Chief Superintendent Paulino Moreno Jr., marking a collaborative effort between government agencies to uphold environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
