MANILA, Philippines — Residents in various parts of the Philippines can expect a few more days of refreshing weather as the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as the “Amihan,” continues to bring cool breezes and light rains across the archipelago. According to the latest bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the effects of the cool dry air mass are expected to persist until at least Wednesday.
The monsoon is currently prevailing over Northern and Central Luzon, while its influence extends down to the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and the Visayas. This weather pattern has resulted in a noticeable dip in early morning temperatures, particularly in mountainous regions and the Cagayan Valley.
“We are seeing the Northeast Monsoon maintaining its strength over the next 48 to 72 hours,” a PAGASA forecaster explained. “While the summer season is approaching, this surge of Amihan provides a temporary reprieve from the rising heat. However, it also brings cloudy skies and occasional light rains to the eastern seaboard.”
While the weather is generally favorable for outdoor activities, the state weather bureau has issued a gale warning for the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon. Small seacraft are advised against venturing out into the sea due to strong winds and rough coastal waters generated by the monsoon surge.
In Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the weather will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains. PAGASA noted that after Wednesday, the monsoon is expected to weaken, making way for the gradual transition toward the “warm and dry” season. This transition often signals the start of higher daytime temperatures and more humid conditions across the country.
Health officials are advising the public to stay hydrated and wear appropriate clothing to manage the fluctuating temperatures—chilly mornings followed by relatively warm afternoons. Travelers and commuters are also encouraged to keep umbrellas handy for the occasional light passing rains typical of this season.
