
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines recorded a total of 701,884 deaths in 2024, averaging roughly 1,918 deaths per day (or one death every minute), according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The figure represents a 1% increase from the 694,821 deaths recorded in 2023.
- Crude Death Rate: 6.2 (six deaths for every 1,000 people), consistent with the previous year.
- Location of Death:
- Health Facilities: 49.7% (348,771 deaths). Metro Manila had the highest proportion of hospital deaths at 70.9%.
- At Home: 49.4% (346,473 deaths).
- Other Locations: 0.9% (including deaths on the street or in transit).
- Medical Attendance: 42.3% of the deceased were not attended by any health care provider (physician, public health officer, or hospital authority).
- Ischemic Heart Diseases: 134,074 deaths (19.1% of total) — remaining the country’s No. 1 killer.
- Neoplasms (Cancer): 77,504 deaths (11%).
- Cerebrovascular Diseases (Stroke): 68,729 deaths (9.8%).
- Pneumonia: 47,260 deaths (6.7%).
- By Sex: Male deaths were significantly higher at 56.4% (395,953) compared to female deaths at 43.6% (305,931).
- Age Groups: The highest proportion of male deaths occurred in the 65–69 age group, while the largest share for females was in the 85 and above category.
- Top Regions: Calabarzon recorded the highest number of deaths (105,239), followed by Metro Manila (86,131).
- Lowest Regions: The BARMM (5,552) and Cordillera (10,323) recorded the fewest registered deaths.
The PSA noted that over the last decade (2015–2024), total registered deaths in the Philippines have increased by 25.2%.
