Alex Eala Secures Second Round Spot at Indian Wells Open

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala continues her meteoric rise on the global stage, securing an automatic spot in the second round of the prestigious Indian Wells Open in California.

Elite Status:

Now holding a career-high world ranking of No. 31 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Eala earned a first-round bye in the tournament, which is scheduled to run from March 4 to 15, 2026. This marks the 20-year-old’s third WTA 1000 event of the season, following strong performances in the Qatar Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Momentum from Dubai:

Eala enters Indian Wells coming off an impressive quarterfinal run in Dubai, where she shocked the tennis world by upsetting World No. 7 Jasmine Paolini and taking down veteran Sorana Cirstea. Her run eventually ended at the hands of her former doubles partner, Coco Gauff.

Tough Competition Ahead:

As a seeded player, Eala joins an elite field in California that includes:

  • Aryna Sabalenka (World No. 1)
  • Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina
  • Mirra Andreeva (Defending Champion)
  • Venus Williams, who is making a wildcard return to the desert.

Following the Indian Wells tournament, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate is expected to compete in the Miami Open, where she previously made history with a semifinal run as a wildcard. With her current form, Eala is rapidly cementing her place among the world’s tennis elite, carrying the hopes of a nation into one of the sport’s biggest stages.
