PAGASA: Amihan to Weaken; Fair Sunday Weather for Most of PH

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Sunday, February 22, 2026, that the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, is expected to further weaken in the coming days.

According to weather specialist Veronica Torres, the effects of the amihan will likely be confined to Northern Luzon by Monday and may only affect Extreme Northern Luzon from Tuesday to Thursday.

Current Weather Conditions (Sunday, Feb 22):

  • Luzon & Metro Manila: The amihan still prevails but with “no significant effect,” resulting in generally fair weather.
  • Visayas & Parts of Mindanao: A shear line (the meeting of cool and warm air) is causing cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms in Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, and the Dinagat Islands.
  • Rest of Mindanao: The easterlies (warm, moist winds from the Pacific) are affecting the rest of the region, bringing warm weather.

The amihan season, characterized by cool and dry winds from Siberia and China, typically begins in late October and concludes by March or early April. Its weakening often signals the approaching transition toward the warmer dry season.
