Tributes Pour in for Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña (1953-2026)

MANILA, Philippines — The late Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña, a titan of Philippine public service and corporate social responsibility, continues to be honored following his passing in early 2026 at the age of 72.

In a moving tribute published on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Dina Ocampo, a 2009 Metrobank Outstanding Teacher recipient, reflected on Sobrepeña’s enduring legacy as a leader who “never ran out of hope or ways to do good things.”

A Lifetime of Service Sobrepeña’s career spanned over five decades of dedicated service to the Filipino people:

  • Government Service: He spent more than 22 years in government, serving as a veteran public servant across various administrations.
  • Metrobank Foundation: He dedicated 30 years to Metrobank, eventually becoming the president of the Metrobank Foundation and the “co-visionary” of its founder, Dr. George Ty.

Architect of Excellence Under Sobrepeña’s leadership, the Metrobank Foundation’s search for Outstanding Filipinos (Teachers, Soldiers, and Cops) became the gold standard for recognition in the country.

  • Setting the Bar: He developed rigorous, excellent processes that influenced how other agencies and universities established their own internal awards and recognition programs.
  • Personal Touch: Awardees remember him for his remarkable ability to personally know each teacher, cop, and soldier recognized by the foundation—often knowing details about their work, their communities, and their families.
  • Inspiration: Ocampo noted that for many public servants, winning a Metrobank Award became a career aspiration that inspired them to serve with “love, integrity, and excellence.”

A Collaborative Leader Beyond the awards, Sobrepeña was a fixture in national discussions regarding teacher welfare and literacy. Ocampo recalled his presence at Department of Education meetings, where he was always ready with a smile and a solution, frequently telling colleagues, “There’s a way to get partners to work.”

Continuing the Legacy As the Metrobank Foundation welcomes its new president, Aniceto Dy, the community of “Outstanding Filipinos” continues to look to Sobrepeña’s life as a blueprint for sustaining standards of excellence.

“We all get tired, but we need to keep on creating our communities and ourselves into people who continue to value good work,” Ocampo wrote, thanking the Sobrepeña family for “sharing him with the rest of the country.”

Chito Sobrepeña is survived by a family that supported his lifelong mission to recognize the “hard and honest work” of Filipinos who are often overlooked but are essential to the nation’s progress.
