COTABATO CITY, Philippines — The Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-BARMM) has launched a comprehensive 30-day Ramadan Meal Plan to help the Islamic faithful maintain their health and nutrition during the upcoming holy month.
The initiative, titled “Wastong Meal Plan, Healthy Ramadhan,” was unveiled by the MOH Health Promotion Unit and Nutrition Division during the “Science and Spirit of Fasting Symposium” held in Cotabato City on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
Nutritional Strategy for Fasting
With the transition from three daily meals to just two—Suhur (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (breaking of the daily fast)—health officials emphasized the need for nutrient-dense food choices.
- Focus on Nutrients: Registered nutritionist-dietitian Faith Laporca noted that the plan prioritizes vegetables like malunggay, kangkong, sitaw, and ampalaya.
- Limit Sugars and Fats: The guide encourages reducing the intake of fried and excessively sugary foods, which can lead to energy crashes during the day.
- Balanced Energy: The goal is to provide sustained energy for the spiritual and sacred activities that characterize the holy month.
Spiritual and Medical Perspectives
The symposium integrated medical advice with spiritual teachings. Sheik Sadawi Sabang Cana of the Bangsomoro Darul Ifta (BDI) highlighted that fasting is a holistic practice aimed at attaining Taqwa (God-consciousness). He noted that experiencing hunger fosters compassion for the poor and encourages acts of charity and kindness.
Timeline for Ramadan 2026
The start of Ramadan is dependent on the traditional moon sighting:
- Moon Sighting: The BDI will conduct the moon sighting on February 17.
- Projected Start: If the crescent moon is visible on the 17th, fasting will officially begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
- Global Convergence: This year, the start of Ramadan coincides closely with the beginning of the Christian season of Lent (Ash Wednesday is also on Feb. 18), leading to calls from religious leaders for national unity and interfaith solidarity.
The MOH-BARMM is distributing copies of the meal plan across the region to ensure that Bangsamoro families have the resources to observe a healthy and spiritually fulfilling Ramadan.
