Metro Manila Subway Project is “Ahead of Schedule,” Says President Marcos

TAGUIG CITY, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Friday, February 13, 2026, that the construction of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is currently ahead of its original timetable, marking a major milestone for the country’s first underground railway system.

The President made the statement during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kalayaan Avenue and Bonifacio Global City (BGC) stations in Taguig.

Key Project Updates

  • Progress Report: Following an inspection of the Shaw Boulevard Station in Pasig, the President noted that work is proceeding faster than planned. “I’m happy to report that the progress is proceeding… and we are very much on schedule. In fact, we have accelerated the process,” Marcos said.
  • New Station Locations: * Kalayaan Avenue Station: To be built beneath 11th Avenue and the Uptown open parking area.
    • BGC Station: To be situated along McKinley Parkway, between Serendra and Market! Market!.
  • Projected Ridership: The BGC stations alone are expected to handle more than 200,000 passengers daily during their first year of operation.

Drastic Travel Time Reductions Once the 33-kilometer subway is fully operational, it is expected to transform urban mobility in the capital:

  • Valenzuela to BGC: Travel time will be slashed from 1.5 hours to just 29 minutes.
  • Quezon City to NAIA: Connectivity to the airport will improve significantly, with travel time dropping from over an hour to 35 minutes.

Strategic Infrastructure The President was accompanied by Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez and other top officials. The MMSP is a centerpiece of the administration’s “Build Better More” program and is largely funded through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The acceleration of the project is seen as a crucial step in decongesting Metro Manila’s surface traffic and providing a reliable, high-capacity alternative for daily commuters. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) continues to fast-track tunneling works using advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to maintain the momentum cited by the President.
