Lyann De Guzman Shines in Star-Studded Nxled Lineup

MONTAlBAN, RIZAL — Despite a roster now featuring a championship-caliber core from the defunct Petro Gazz Angels, rookie Lyann De Guzman continues to prove why she was a top priority for Nxled in the last draft. The former Ateneo Blue Eagles skipper played a pivotal role as the Chameleons swept Capital1, 25-18, 28-26, 25-18, on Saturday to maintain a perfect 2-0 start in the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference.

Playing at the Ynares Center Montalban, Nxled leaned on its high-profile acquisitions, with three-time MVP Brooke Van Sickle and Myla Pablo each tallying 15 points. However, it was De Guzman’s versatility and work ethic that drew special praise from Italian head coach Ettore Guidetti.

Rookie Impact and Versatility

  • Stat Line: De Guzman contributed 13 points, built on 12 successful kills, providing the scoring punch needed to overcome a tough second-set challenge from the Solar Spikers and top pick Bella Belen.
  • Flexible Role: Guidetti highlighted De Guzman’s ability to thrive as either a starter or a spark plug off the bench. In Nxled’s season opener against Farm Fresh, she was instrumental in a five-set comeback victory.
  • Adaptability: Transitioning from her collegiate role as an outside hitter, De Guzman has embraced playing the opposite position for the Chameleons. “Whatever coach needs, I’ll give what I can,” she said.

Team Chemistry De Guzman credited the smooth integration of the new veterans for the team’s early success. The core of the team technically consists of the defending champions from the former Petro Gazz roster, bringing a level of professional experience that has accelerated the squad’s development.

  • Healthy Competition: The rookie noted that the presence of stars like Van Sickle has created a “healthy competition” where every player is motivated to contribute.
  • Learning Environment: “Everyone is willing to learn from each other,” De Guzman added, noting that the veterans’ experience has made the transition to the pros easier for her.

Looking Ahead While satisfied with the 2-0 start, Coach Guidetti emphasized that the team is still a work in progress. Nxled will face its biggest test yet when it takes on Cignal on Valentine’s Day (February 14) at the Ynares Center Antipolo.

“Every single week there is enough time to take a little step forward,” Guidetti said, as the Chameleons aim to solidify their position as serious title contenders in the star-studded 2026 conference.
