Cignal HD Spikers Defeat Choco Mucho, Prove Chemistry Trumps Offseason Hype

SAN JUAN CITY, Philippines — While the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference offseason was defined by high-profile transfers and massive signings, the Cignal HD Spikers opted for stability—a decision that is paying immediate dividends.

In a clash of philosophies on Thursday, February 5, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre, the “quiet” Cignal squad dismantled the star-studded Choco Mucho Flying Titans in four sets: 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Chemistry over Star Power The Flying Titans entered the match as favorites after a blockbuster offseason that saw the return of Sisi Rondina from the national program and the landmark signing of Eya Laure. However, Cignal’s long-standing connection proved too resilient for the newly formed “super team.”

  • Erika Santos Leads: The former PVL on Tour MVP delivered a stellar performance, finishing with 18 points (14 attacks, two aces, and two blocks).
  • Vanie Gandler’s Stability: Gandler, a national team standout, contributed 16 points and emphasized that the team’s bond was their greatest asset. “In volleyball, you really need to connect with each other… our connection definitely improved compared to last year,” she said.
  • National Experience: Libero Dawn Catindig and Gandler’s international experience provided the composure needed to weather Choco Mucho’s surges.

Supporting Performances

  • Jackie Acuña: Anchored the defense with 13 points, including five crucial blocks.
  • Gel Cayuna: Orchestrated the offense with 23 excellent sets while contributing four points of her own.

Choco Mucho Struggle for Sync Despite the loss, Choco Mucho’s individual talents shone:

  • Sisi Rondina: Recorded a game-high 20 points and 16 excellent receptions.
  • Eya Laure: Finished with 11 points, 15 receptions, and eight digs in her debut.
  • Dindin Santiago-Manabat: Added 10 points.

Outlook Cignal’s 2-0 start validates their strategy of retaining a core roster rather than engaging in the offseason bidding wars. The Super Spikers aim to extend their winning streak to three when they face another retooled squad, Farm Fresh, this coming Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The victory serves as a reminder to the league that while firepower is essential, the “invisible” element of team chemistry remains the ultimate equalizer in the PVL.
