MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau PAGASA has placed the southern portion of Surigao del Sur under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression “Basyang” continues its approach toward the Philippine landmass on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
According to the 5 a.m. bulletin, the center of the cyclone was located approximately 895 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching 70 kph.
Areas Under Signal No. 1 Residents in the following southern Surigao del Sur municipalities should prepare for winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph:
- Cagwait, Marihatag, San Agustin, Barobo, Tagbina, Hinatuan, Bislig City, Lingig, and Lianga.
Projected Track and Intensity
- Storm Upgrade: Forecasters expect “Basyang” to intensify into a tropical storm within the day while moving over the Philippine Sea.
- Landfall: The cyclone is projected to make its initial landfall over eastern Mindanao between Thursday evening (Feb. 5) and Friday morning (Feb. 6).
- Path: After landfall, it is expected to cross northeastern Mindanao and the Central and Western Visayas, emerging over the Sulu Sea by Saturday morning. It may then pass over northern Palawan before exiting into the West Philippine Sea.
- Max Signal: PAGASA indicated that the highest wind signal likely to be raised during this event is Signal No. 2.
Coastal Hazards A gale warning has been issued for the eastern seaboards of the Visayas due to strong to gale-force winds. Specifically, the northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar and Eastern Samar are expected to experience rough conditions. Mariners of small seacraft are advised to remain in port and avoid navigating under these dangerous conditions.
Amihan and Local Weather While “Basyang” threatens the south, the northeast monsoon (Amihan) continues to affect Northern Luzon, particularly Cagayan Valley and the Cordilleras, bringing light rains and cooler temperatures. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.
PAGASA urges residents in hazard-prone areas—especially those in Mindanao and Visayas—to monitor official weather updates and comply with evacuation orders from local government units to ensure safety.
