LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — Police authorities launched a major strike against illegal gambling in Bicol, resulting in the arrest of 29 individuals during a synchronized raid on a suspected jueteng den on Friday evening.
The operation, led by the Albay Provincial Police Office in coordination with regional intelligence units, targeted a clandestine facility reportedly serving as a central hub for the illegal numbers game across several municipalities.
The Operation Acting on a tip-off from concerned residents, undercover operatives infiltrated the premises before the joint task force moved in. The raid caught many of the suspects in the act of tallying bets and preparing “bolas” (draws).
- The Arrests: Among the 29 nabbed were alleged “cobradores” (collectors), “revisadores” (tally clerks), and at least two individuals suspected of acting as “cabos” or supervisors for the local syndicate.
- Evidence Seized: Police recovered over P150,000 in cash believed to be bet money, along with various gambling paraphernalia including tally sheets, mobile phones used for coordinating draws, and several motor vehicles used by the collectors.
Clamping Down on Illegal Numbers The Bicol Regional Police Office has intensified its campaign against illegal gambling, noting that jueteng operations often compete with the government-sanctioned Small Town Lottery (STL) and deprive the state of revenue used for social services.
“We will not allow these illegal syndicates to continue their operations in Albay. This raid is a clear message that we are serious about enforcing the law against all forms of illegal gambling,” a police spokesperson stated following the operation.
Legal Consequences All 29 suspects are currently detained at the provincial police headquarters. They face formal charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602, which prescribes stiff penalties for illegal gambling.
Authorities are also investigating potential links between the arrested operators and local influential figures to determine the scale of the gambling network in the province.
