Marcos Says New Malampaya East-1 Gas Field Could Power Millions of Homes and Schools

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has announced a major natural gas discovery at the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) well — the first significant gas find in the Malampaya area in more than a decade — that could help light and power millions of homes, buildings, and schools across the Philippines. MAE-1 is located roughly 5 km east of the original Malampaya field, the country’s largest indigenous gas resource.

According to Marcos, initial estimates suggest the new reservoir holds about 98 billion cubic feet of gas, which could generate nearly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in one year. If fully developed, that supply could help power over 5.7 million households, 9,500 commercial buildings, and nearly 200,000 schools annually — reinforcing energy security and easing power cost pressures for Filipino consumers and businesses.

The discovery occurred under the Malampaya Phase 4 drilling program, which is part of a broader government-backed effort to extend and expand local natural gas production. The success of MAE-1 — along with other wells being drilled under the renewed Service Contract 38 — could boost domestic energy output at a time when the original Malampaya reserves were declining, helping stabilize electricity supply for years to come.

  • Energy security: Natural gas from Malampaya has been a backbone of electricity supply for Luzon and surrounding regions; a fresh find helps prolong its role in the grid.
  • Cost and access: Increased domestic gas production may ease fuel import dependence and help keep electricity costs more stable.
  • Powering key services: Electricity from local gas can support not just households but schools, hospitals, and businesses — contributing to economic and social development.
