MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is planning upgrades and capacity expansions for major transport hubs, including the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), after it recorded a record-breaking 5.6 million passengers in December 2025 — the highest monthly volume since the terminal opened in 2018.
DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted the milestone during a January 13, 2026, briefing, noting that the surge reflects strong holiday travel demand, improved public transport connectivity, and PITX’s growing role as Metro Manila’s southern gateway.
December 2025 PITX Highlights
- Total Passengers: 5.6 million (up ~15–20% from previous Decembers)
- Peak Days: Christmas and New Year weeks saw daily averages exceeding 200,000 passengers
- Bus Trips: Over 150,000 bus trips handled for provincial routes (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Bicol, Visayas, Mindanao)
- Key Routes: Strongest growth in trips to Batangas ports (for Mindoro, Visayas ferries), Laguna, and Bicol
Planned Enhancements for PITX and Other Hubs
DOTr is prioritizing the following upgrades in 2026:
- Expanded Waiting Areas & Seating — Additional covered spaces to accommodate peak-hour crowds
- Improved Ventilation & Air Quality — Installation of more fans, air purifiers, and misting systems
- Digital Ticketing & Queue Management — Enhanced e-ticketing integration and real-time bus tracking to reduce congestion
- Additional Comfort Facilities — More restrooms, charging stations, food courts, and nursing rooms
- Security & CCTV Upgrades — Increased personnel and AI-powered monitoring
- Last-Mile Connectivity — More e-jeepneys, UV shuttles, and bike lanes linking to PITX
Similar improvements are planned for other key terminals:
- Cubao Bus Terminal
- Buendia Bus Terminal
- Alabang Bus Terminal
- 5th Avenue Terminal (EDSA)
Secretary Dizon stated:
“The record 5.6 million passengers show how vital PITX has become to millions of Filipinos. We are committed to making our transport hubs safer, more comfortable, and more efficient to match the growing demand.”
Here are photos from the crowded PITX during the December holiday rush — packed bus bays, long queues, and passengers waiting for provincial rides.
A strong showing for public transport usage — but also a clear signal that infrastructure upgrades are urgently needed!
