Rainy Weather Persists in Southern Luzon Due to Shear Line: PAGASA Update

MANILA – The shear line continues to bring cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rains across Southern Luzon, particularly the Bicol Region and parts of Quezon, as of early January 2026. PAGASA’s latest forecasts (January 5-7 bulletins) warn of moderate to heavy rainfall (up to 50-100 mm in some areas), raising risks of flooding in low-lying zones and landslides in mountainous terrain.

Affected Areas and Conditions

  • Bicol Region (Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte/Sur): Heavy rains likely; yellow rainfall warnings issued (e.g., Sorsogon, Catanduanes on Jan 7).
  • Quezon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon: Scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms.
  • Rest of Southern Luzon: Partly cloudy to cloudy with light to moderate rains.

The shear line—convergence of cold amihan (northeast monsoon) and warm easterlies—remains active, with no low-pressure area or tropical cyclone monitored inside the PAR.

PAGASA cautions: Saturated soil from prior rains heightens hazards—avoid flood-prone areas and monitor local advisories.

Stay dry and safe, Southern Luzon! ☔
