Restored ‘Bahay Kastila’ in Cavite Reclaims Place in Civic Memory

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – The historic Sarayba Ancestral House, affectionately known as Bahay Kastila, has been meticulously restored and transformed into a vibrant cultural heritage center, reclaiming its significant role in the city’s civic and historical memory. The local government-led renovation project culminated in a grand public opening in late 2025, turning the once-dilapidated Spanish-era structure into a living testament to General Trias’ rich past.

Built in the late 19th century, the house exemplifies classic bahay na bato architecture—stone lower level for stability, wooden upper floors with capiz shell windows, and intricate carvings reflecting Hispanic influences. It served as a residence for the prominent Sarayba family and witnessed key events in Cavite’s history, including the Philippine Revolution.

The restoration preserved original features like hardwood floors, ventanillas, and azotea balconies while adding modern amenities for public use: Exhibit halls showcasing artifacts, a mini-museum on local history, event spaces for cultural programs, and a café highlighting Caviteño cuisine.

Local officials hailed it as a “resilient symbol of artistry and spirit,” boosting heritage tourism in General Trias—home to revolutionary sites like the Tejeros Convention. Visitors now experience a tangible link to the past, fostering civic pride and education.

A beautiful revival—preserving history while embracing the future!
