Philippines Eyes Hosting Inaugural SEA Plus Youth Games in 2028

The Philippines is seeking to host the inaugural Southeast Asia Plus Youth Games in 2028, a move aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development and positioning the country as a regional hub for youth athletics.

Sports officials said the proposed multi-sport event would bring together young athletes from Southeast Asia and selected neighboring countries, providing a competitive platform focused on talent development and international exposure. Hosting the games is seen as an opportunity to enhance youth participation in sports while promoting sportsmanship and regional cooperation.

Preparations for the bid include identifying suitable venues, assessing infrastructure readiness, and coordinating with national sports associations. Officials noted that existing facilities built or upgraded for previous international competitions could be utilized, reducing the need for large-scale construction while ensuring compliance with international standards.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader sports agenda, which emphasizes early athlete development, improved training programs, and increased access to competition for young Filipinos. Organizers believe hosting the event could inspire greater youth involvement in sports at the community level and help identify future national team prospects.

Beyond athletic benefits, the proposed games are expected to generate economic activity through tourism, hospitality, and related services. Local governments and private partners are being encouraged to support the bid, with discussions ongoing regarding funding, logistics, and security arrangements.

If approved, the 2028 SEA Plus Youth Games would mark another milestone in the Philippines’ growing role in regional sports hosting. Officials expressed confidence that the country’s experience in staging international events, combined with strong community support, would contribute to a successful and memorable competition for young athletes across the region.
