DOH Reports Spike in Stroke, Heart Disease, and Asthma Cases During Late December

The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded a noticeable increase in cases of stroke, heart disease, and asthma across the Philippines from December 21 to 31, raising concerns over public health risks during the holiday period. Health officials attributed the surge to a combination of lifestyle factors, environmental conditions, and seasonal behaviors common during year-end celebrations.

According to the DOH, indulgence in fatty and salty foods, increased alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, and heightened stress levels may have contributed to the rise in cardiovascular-related illnesses. Cold weather conditions were also cited as a possible trigger for asthma attacks and other respiratory problems, particularly among vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Health authorities emphasized the importance of moderation during holidays, reminding the public to maintain balanced diets, stay hydrated, and continue prescribed medications. The DOH also urged individuals experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches, or difficulty breathing to seek immediate medical attention.

Hospitals and emergency units were advised to remain on heightened alert during peak holiday seasons, when medical consultations typically increase. The DOH reiterated its call for preventive care and healthy habits, stressing that early detection and timely treatment are key to reducing complications and saving lives.
