ITCZ Brings Rains to Mindanao, Amihan Prevails in Northern Luzon: PAGASA Forecast for December 19

MANILA – The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will continue to trigger scattered rain showers and thunderstorms across Mindanao on Thursday, December 19, 2025, while the northeast monsoon (amihan) dominates Northern Luzon with cloudy skies and light rains, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The ITCZ—a belt of low pressure where trade winds converge—remains the primary weather driver in the south, potentially causing localized flooding in vulnerable areas during heavy bursts. Meanwhile, the amihan brings cooler, drier air to the north, with isolated light rains possible.

Regional Breakdown

  • Mindanao: Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms (ITCZ effect). Flash floods or landslides possible during severe thunderstorms.
  • Northern Luzon (Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, Ilocos Region): Cloudy with light rains (amihan).
  • Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA: Partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains (amihan influence).
  • Metro Manila & Rest of Luzon: Partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers (localized thunderstorms possible).
  • Visayas: Partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms (easterlies/ITCZ fringe).

No tropical cyclones are monitored, and gale warnings remain lifted, though moderate to rough seas (2.1-3.5 meters) may affect northern and eastern coasts—small vessels advised caution.

PAGASA urges monitoring in flood-prone zones, especially in Mindanao where soils remain saturated from recent rains. Temperatures: Metro Manila 24-31°C; Baguio 15-22°C.

As the holiday rush intensifies with travel and outdoor events, this split weather pattern calls for preparedness—rain gear for the south, jackets for the north.
