Jail Inmates Find Hope and Confidence Through English Course: A Path to Rehabilitation

QUEZON CITY – In a heartwarming initiative that turns confinement into opportunity, inmates at the Quezon City Jail have discovered renewed hope and self-confidence through a free English proficiency course offered by the Idiom Language and Training Center. The program, launched in partnership with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), has empowered dozens of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) to improve communication skills, boost literacy, and envision brighter futures upon release.

The course, which concluded its latest batch with a graduation ceremony on December 12, 2025, focused on practical English for daily interactions, job interviews, and personal growth. Inmates like John Doe (name withheld for privacy), a 35-year-old father serving time for theft, shared how the classes transformed his outlook: “Before, I felt hopeless—limited words, limited dreams. Now, I can express myself, write letters to my family, and even imagine working abroad or starting a small business when I get out.” Another graduate, a former call center agent fallen on hard times, added: “English opens doors. This course gave me back my confidence.”

Idiom’s founder, Maria Santos, emphasized the program’s rehabilitative impact: “Language is liberation. By teaching English, we’re not just imparting grammar—we’re restoring dignity and preparing them for reintegration.” The center provided volunteer teachers, materials, and even snacks, with classes held twice weekly inside the jail’s multipurpose hall.

BJMP Quezon City Jail Warden Supt. Helen Andrade hailed the collaboration: “Education reduces recidivism. These inmates are learning skills that will help them become productive citizens.” The jail, housing over 3,000 PDLs, has seen similar programs in livelihood training and values formation, but English proficiency stands out for its global applicability.

The initiative aligns with broader BJMP efforts under the Therapeutic Community Modality Program, where education and skills training are pillars of reform. Graduates received certificates, with some expressing interest in advanced courses or tutoring peers.

In a season of reflection and redemption, this English course isn’t just lessons—it’s a lifeline, proving that behind bars, hope speaks fluent possibility.

Program Highlights:

  • Participants: Dozens of male and female PDLs
  • Duration: Several months, twice-weekly sessions
