Hidilyn Diaz Admits Tough Bid for Gold at SEA Games 2025: A Realistic Outlook from the Olympic Icon

BANGKOK, Thailand – Philippine weightlifting legend Hidilyn Diaz has candidly acknowledged the formidable challenge ahead in her quest for a fifth consecutive SEA Games gold medal, admitting that securing the top spot in the women’s 55kg category at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games will be “tough” due to rising regional competition. The 34-year-old Tokyo Olympic champion, who has dominated the event since 2015, shared her realistic perspective during a pre-competition interview on December 13, 2025, emphasizing focus on personal bests over expectations.

Diaz, competing in her sixth SEA Games, faces stiff opposition from younger lifters, including Thailand’s home favorite and Vietnam’s emerging talents, in a field where records have tightened. “It’s going to be tough for gold,” Diaz said with her trademark humility. “But I’m here to give my all—for the Philippines and for the love of the sport.” Her preparation, balancing motherhood (with daughter Isabella) and training, has been “consistent but challenging,” she added, crediting coach Julius Naranjo for keeping her sharp.

The weightlifting events, held at the Nimibutr Stadium, run through December 18, with Diaz’s category slated for December 15. A gold would extend her SEA Games streak to five (2015 Manila, 2017 Kuala Lumpur, 2019 Manila, 2021 Hanoi, 2023 Cambodia), cementing her as one of the Philippines’ most decorated athletes. Silver or bronze would still add to her medal haul, but Diaz’s sights remain high: “Whatever the color, it’s for the country.”

This admission reflects Diaz’s maturity post-Olympics—shifting from pressure to passion—while inspiring the Philippine delegation targeting 60 golds. As the Games heat up, Diaz’s grit reminds: In sport’s arena, honesty fuels the fire for glory.
