DepEd Bolsters Feeding Program to Accelerate Learning Recovery Nationwide

MANILA – In a strategic push to combat nutritional barriers and ignite reading proficiency among young learners, the Department of Education (DepEd) has amplified its School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) under the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (Aral) initiative, rolling out universal feeding for Kindergarten to Grade 1 students across all public schools for the first time. The enhanced program, backed by a robust P28.66 billion allocation from the Senate’s General Appropriations Bill, targets struggling readers and wasted students with extended support, aiming to slash absenteeism and supercharge foundational literacy in a nation still mending from pandemic scars.

The rollout, hailed as a “game-changer for equity,” extends SBFP to 200 feeding days for severely wasted, wasted, and adolescent pregnant learners in higher grades, while sourcing milk from local farmers and food from DOST-FNRI-certified suppliers to weave economic ripples through rural communities. Education Secretary Sonny Angara spotlighted early wins during a visit to Talon and Moonwalk Elementary Schools in Las Piñas City: At Talon, 575 struggling readers dwindled to 233 by midyear, with 342 (71%) exiting the Aral program after mastering reading benchmarks – a triumph credited to tireless teachers and tutors. Moonwalk, the division’s second-best SBFP implementer, nourished 789 beneficiaries with seamless logistics that turned meals into milestones.

“That’s due to the work of our teachers, Aral tutors, because of their intervention, they learned how to read, those over 300 students out of the 575,” Angara beamed, his pride palpable amid the classrooms buzzing with progress. Talon clinched the top spot in the National Achievement Test (NAT), a testament to the synergy of feeding and focused reading interventions. “With wider areas now eligible for LGU funding, schools can expect faster and more appropriate support without waiting for action from the national level,” he added, spotlighting the updated Joint Circular on the Special Education Fund that empowers local governments to turbocharge early-grade literacy and recovery efforts.

This nationwide blitz isn’t just about plates full of porridge – it’s a lifeline laced with learning, tackling the 28.8% stunting rate that’s Southeast Asia’s shadow and the 15% absenteeism spike tied to empty stomachs. By blending SBFP’s nutritional net with Aral’s targeted tutoring, DepEd is scripting a story of resilience: From Benguet’s misty mornings to Mindanao’s sun-baked shores, every spoon feeds not just bodies, but bright futures. As the holidays dawn with their calls for cheer, Angara’s vision rings resonant – in the Philippines’ classroom chorus, nourished minds will harmonize the nation’s next verse.
