Kanlaon Volcano Emits Ash Again, Phivolcs Warns of Ongoing Hazards

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has recently emitted ash once more, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to maintain Alert Level 2, indicating “increased unrest.”

The ash emission lasted for about 12 minutes, with gray plumes rising up to 300 meters above the crater and drifting southwest. Previous plumes had reached up to 500 meters, confirming the volcano remains active.

In the 24 hours prior to the ash emission, PHIVOLCS recorded eight volcanic earthquakes and measured 2,313 tonnes of sulfur dioxide released. The volcano’s structure also remains inflated, suggesting ongoing magma movement beneath the surface.

Authorities continue to advise the public to stay out of the 4‑kilometer Permanent Danger Zone and caution aircraft to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit.
