Manila Water Strengthens Water Security with Full Takeover of Upper Wawa Dam

Manila Water has taken a major step to bolster water security for Metro Manila’s East Zone by acquiring 100% ownership of WawaJVCo, the company behind the Upper Wawa Dam project. This move lets Manila Water integrate the dam into its operations, giving it direct control over a critical water source.

The deal, valued at around ₱37.8 billion, is expected to close soon. Once completed, Manila Water will operate both the Upper Wawa Dam and the Tayabasan Weir, which together can supply up to 712 million liters of raw water daily.

Why it matters:

  • It gives Manila Water more control and flexibility over water allocation, supporting long-term sustainability and efficiency.
  • The Upper Wawa Dam is expected to begin commercial operations, adding a reliable raw water source that strengthens resilience for millions of people.
  • The acquisition aligns with Manila Water’s broader water security strategy, helping reduce reliance on existing major water sources like the Angat Dam.
