PNP Credits Juan Ponce Enrile for Boosting Professionalism in the Police Force

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formally recognised Juan Ponce Enrile for his role in fostering professionalism and reform in the Philippine police service, noting that his 1970s‑era directive helped reshape what became the Metro Manila Police Force and laid groundwork for modern discipline and structure.

Enrile, then holding a senior defence post, approved the foundational rules governing the Metropolitan Police Force and issued regulations that emphasised standardised training, accountability and a more uniform command system. These actions were seen as early steps in the long journey toward a more professional, service‑oriented police institution.

The PNP emphasised that today’s reforms—for example updated capability‑building programmes, integrity units and stronger community‑relations frameworks—can trace part of their lineage to those early structural reforms. Institutional memories of Enrile’s initiative serve as reference points for ongoing transformation efforts.
