China Commissions Advanced Aircraft Carrier Fujian, Accelerating Naval Reach

China has officially commissioned its latest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, marking a new era for its naval capabilities. The vessel is the country’s third carrier and the first to be both designed and built domestically, highlighting China’s growing maritime ambitions.

The Fujian is equipped with electromagnetic catapult launch systems, a significant upgrade from the ski‑jump decks used on previous carriers. This allows heavier aircraft to take off with full fuel and ammunition loads, increasing sortie capacity and operational flexibility.

With this addition, China’s navy can begin forming a three‑carrier fleet, enhancing its ability to project power beyond its coastal waters and deeper into the Pacific. Analysts see the Fujian as a key element in China’s goal of building a “blue‑water” navy capable of operating far from home bases.

However, experts caution that while commissioning is a milestone, the carrier still faces limitations. It uses conventional propulsion rather than nuclear power, which constrains its operational endurance compared to other major navies. Full operational readiness will require months or even years of training, integration with support ships and air wings, and realistic testing at sea.
