Surigao del Sur Hospital Tops PhilHealth Claims Among DOH Facilities

SURIGAO DEL SUR — A provincial hospital here just claimed the crown as the number one processor of PhilHealth reimbursements among all Department of Health-run facilities nationwide, proving that top-notch care and smart paperwork can go hand in hand.

The Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center in Tandag City processed over ₱500 million in claims last year, outpacing bigger urban hospitals. Staff credit streamlined digital systems, dedicated billing teams, and a relentless focus on getting every eligible patient covered.

“It means more funds flowing back to upgrade equipment, hire specialists, and keep services free for the poor,” hospital chief Dr. Emmanuel Bueno told reporters with a grin. The windfall has already funded a new dialysis unit and pediatric ward expansion.

Patients are feeling the difference too—shorter waits, better meds, and zero surprise bills for indigent families. As word spreads, nearby provinces are sending teams to study Tandag’s playbook.

Who knew bureaucracy could save lives?
