Minor Eruption at Mount Kanlaon Sends Ashfall and Sulfur Odor to Nearby Communities

A brief explosive event at Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental on Friday resulted in ashfall and a noticeable sulfuric smell in five nearby barangays. Local authorities reported that the eruption prompted light ash deposits and a strong sulfur odor across several areas, including Bago City, La Carlota City and San Carlos City.
The eruption lasted nearly an hour, producing audible rumbling and drifting ash clouds that prompted alerts from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

In response, local disaster operations centres encouraged residents to take precautions such as wearing masks if ash is present, and staying alert for further activity.
Though the eruption was relatively small, it serves as a reminder of the volcano’s ongoing unrest and the importance of monitoring and response measures for nearby communities.
