The recently appointed Speaker of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has made a strong commitment to govern with independence and respect for the rule of law. In remarks following the leadership change, the Speaker emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability, and fair processes as foundational to the region’s governance.
He stressed that although the BARMM government operates under the broader Philippine legal framework, it must safeguard its autonomy by ensuring policies and decisions are made without undue influence. In his vision, this includes:
- Strengthening institutional checks and balances in the regional government,
- Upholding human rights and due process in legislation,
- Collaborating with national agencies while retaining local decision-making authority, and
- Ensuring that the BARMM Parliament serves its constituents, not external political pressures.
Observers note this comes at a critical time, as BARMM assumes key responsibilities devolved under the peace agreement and seeks to build public trust after years of unrest. The Speaker’s words suggest a shift towards more independent and rule-based governance — though how that translates into policy and practice remains to be seen.
