PH Coast Guard Boosts Regional Maritime Ties in Joint Exercise with US, Japan

MANILA — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has reaffirmed its regional security partnerships through its active participation in a trilateral maritime exercise with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in Kagoshima, Japan.

After completing the 2nd Trilateral Maritime Exercise, the PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) returned to the Port of Manila on Wednesday morning. The five-day drill, aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive, aimed to enhance maritime coordination and strengthen alliances in the Indo-Pacific.

Key activities included communication drills (COMMEX), search and rescue operations (SAREX), fire-fighting simulations (FFEX), coordinated photo operations (PHOTOEX), and personnel transfer exercises.

Rear Admiral Hostillo Arturo Cornelio welcomed the 123-member PCG delegation on behalf of Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan, underscoring the significance of international cooperation.

“This trilateral exercise showcases the unity and shared dedication among allied nations. It boosts both capability and trust across our maritime forces,” the PCG said in a statement.

The drills focused on interoperability and joint response strategies for maritime incidents and disasters. It also provided an opportunity to share best practices and build trust among the three coast guards, reflecting their common goal of maintaining peace and stability in the region.

This initiative highlights the Philippines’ deepening commitment to maritime cooperation in light of regional tensions and disputed waters. It also builds on previous engagements with allies to uphold freedom of navigation and a rules-based international order.

The PCG thanked both Japan and the United States for their continued support and said future collaborations are already being planned.
