In what many are calling a miracle, 40-year-old British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh appears to be the only survivor of the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which had 242 people on board.
The London-bound Boeing 787-8 crashed just moments after taking off, claiming the lives of nearly all passengers and crew. Local officials have yet to confirm a final death toll, but police say Ramesh’s survival defies the odds.
Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, is being treated for chest, eye, and foot injuries. From his hospital bed, he recounted the horrifying moment: “It all happened so quickly… there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.” He said someone pulled him into an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital.
Authorities confirmed that Ramesh was traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was seated elsewhere on the plane and is currently missing. The two were returning to the UK after visiting family in India.
Air India reported that of the 242 people onboard, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
