Freddie Aguilar, one of the Philippines’ most influential musical icons, passed away due to multiple organ failure at the Philippine Heart Center, according to his former partner Josephine Quiepo.
The heartbreaking news was announced by Boy Abunda during the May 27 episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, citing Quiepo’s confirmation. Abunda shared that Aguilar had asked for prayers on May 20 via his Facebook page but did not disclose his medical condition at the time.
The singer’s passing was earlier confirmed by Atty. George Briones of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Aguilar once served as national executive vice president. He was 72 years old.
Aguilar’s last partner, Jovie Albao, has yet to make a public statement about his death but mentioned on Facebook that she needed strength to care for him during his final moments.
Best known for his globally renowned song “Anak,” Aguilar left an indelible mark on Filipino music by fusing folk, Manila sound, and rock influences. His signature long hair, fedora hat, and clear sunglasses made him a distinct figure in Philippine pop culture and OPM history.
