PH, New Zealand Seal SOVFA to Boost Defense Ties and Joint Military Drills

The Philippines and New Zealand have formalized a defense partnership through the signing of a Status of Forces Agreement (SOVFA), enabling both nations to conduct joint military exercises and enhance security cooperation.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. witnessed the signing on Wednesday, as Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins formalized the agreement in Malacañang. Collins also paid a courtesy visit to President Marcos.

The SOVFA establishes the legal basis for New Zealand’s military presence in the Philippines during joint activities. It mirrors existing pacts the Philippines has with the United States and Australia, and aligns with ongoing agreements with Japan and Canada.

Collins described the agreement as a step forward in defense collaboration, facilitating exercises and joint operations within both countries’ territories.
